The Minimalist Home by Joshua Becker
One sentence summary: Get the house you always wished you had (and transform your life) by focusing on what you love in your home and removing the rest.
Favorite Quote: “Minimalism isn't about removing the things you love. It’s about removing things that distract you from the things you love.”
What I liked: The emphasis on building your dream home, not on what you shouldn’t own. The comments about having extra dishes for guests because homes are meant for hospitality.
What I didn't like: The idea of keeping only one pair of shoes. Some people thrive on capsule wardrobes, others shrivel and die without variety..... Moderation is key.
Drink I would pair with this book: Black tea, coffee… Something cozy that makes you cherish sitting in your home as you dream of what you’d like it to be, but with enough caffeine to give you the courage to get up and start making it happen.
Sort of person I would recommend this book to: Teenagers who are just starting out on their junk collecting journey. Newlyweds. Those who have just moved into a new dorm/apartment/home. Just about anyone who owns stuff.
What I learned from reading this book: Minimalism doesn't mean a sad boring house. Or a sad boring life. Rather, “minimalism is the intentional promotion of things we most value and the removal of anything that distracts us from them.”It can actually give you a joyful exciting house and a joyful exciting life.
How I felt about this book: It was a very easy and enjoyable read, scattered through with relatable anecdotes. It's the sort of book that actually inspires you to get up and do something.
Further reading it inspired: Any other books by Joshua Becker.
“Just about anyone who owns stuff”😂. Charming post. Just purged my own stuff the third time in 3 weeks. I now feel less distracted from the things I love. Let’s hear more from this blog.
I can testify that having a lot of guests requires having more than two dishes... If my home weren't prepared for hospitality, how hygge actually is it?!?!? I would die sad and lonely (possibly the most minimalist way to die... without any friends...) whoa. That got dark. But on a brighter side I can't say how much I appreciate a book summary that isn't a whole book! The bullet points with thoughtful questions are so refreshing! Can't wait for the next post 👀
This sounds like a great read! I am not a minimalist...yet. But you guys just might make me one! I love the idea of getting rid of stuff you don't love to make room for the stuff that you do, but I agree that I need MANY pairs of shoes for true happiness!
