Well hello there...

Updated: Apr 11, 2024

So it has been a while... as it turns out when Easter comes around ,like any other Holiday, life gets a little crazy. Upon reflection, it was another good day of rejoicing and celebration and yes...hygge. Unlike Chirstmas, I didn't go into Easter with specific goals of how to make the season more hygge. The beauty of Christmas is it's natural hygge and how hygge goals are more apparent and obtainable. BUT! enough of Christmas. Easter was still in its own way very very much hygge. The long penitential season of lent made Easter Sunday more hygge. With each bite of cake every taste bud was more awake. The sunlight pouring into the house was so much brighter. The games played with family so much more fun! Why, without direct intent, was Easter so hygge? I will posit an answer, but to really understand it you may have to get to know me a little bit more.

Easter was hygge because of the reason we celebrate it. Christ's resurrection brought joy and hope. But that happiness comes with a price. As a Catholic I practice the season of lent, which is full of liturgical practices and ceremonies. Basically, fast, abstain, pray, and do it all for the right reason. God gave His own Son for our salvation, so it makes sense that we have to give Him a penitential season of life. After going through many seasons of Lents, it always seems that the harder the season of Lent is, the more joyous Easter is.

Let me try to explain it in a more simple way. The Danes (who are THE hygge people) believe that happiness comes from enjoying the little things in their proper place. They would go outside, work hard only to come in and enjoy their families, a delicious meal, and the glorious warmth. In other words, what makes the good things in life so much more enjoyable and so much more hyggelit are all the hard things.

Now, I could launch into the expected disclaimer of being a Catholic and how some people are not etc. etc. but instead I will end will one of my favorite quote from one of my

favorite books "The boy, the mole, the fox, and the horse".

So cool!! So you could technically have a hygge lent by ignoring the things that AREN'T hygge: Social media, TV, and fast food, all to more appreciate the joy that the little things in life bring you. And yes, splurge on Easter with a bit more of the scrumptious side of hygge :)
